There's one in place in Sibu I have to go to everytime I visit, and it's not just my grandmother's chinese medicine shop.
It's the Kompia shop on Tiong Hua road, and believe it or not, it's not on a shopping street, it's run out of the owner's driveway, a purely family affair and has become somewhat of a local institution. I didn't learn the name till this trip but my mum knows exactly which one I'm talking about everytime I ask for the kompia that's from 'someone's driveway'.
They've been around since my parent's school days and if there's something I love more than Kampua and Sarawak Laksa, it's this.
Now, Kompia is merely the dialect name and is used to describe the bun and sometimes the entire dish, translated 'Kompia' means 'empty biscuit', basically a dough that's baked in a cylinder oven: like so
My mother would buy the Kompia from Kuching or Sibu and makes her own rendition, but this place is the best.
The few tables spread throughout the driveway, I always see heaps of motorbikes stopping outside to buy takeaway.
Now, this place only serves one dish, the kompia and the signature drink is a plum drink. None of that fizzy crap, this is tasty and healthy.
The Hero dish, one can order the kompia as a minimum of 2 for the meat version and 3 for just the bun, both versions are soaked in the sauce, which is a sweetened version of a stewed soy sauce on a vintage metal plate. I usually have more, but that day I'd just come from a big family lunch so 2 was the most I could stuff into my tummy.
A chendol dessert rounds up the meal, and guess what, a plate of Kompia, a plum drink and a chendol will only cost you 4 ringgit, which according to xe.com is 1.20aud. How's that for value?
The kitchen, part mama shop. Loads of sweets for kids to buy after school, how nostalgic!
It's treasures like this that make me excited to visit Sibu over and over again. I love that things don't change that much, or it changes at a slow pace. Other things advance but the stuff that matter don't. Like they say, if it ain't broke, don't fix it.
